Robin: When you dig deeper into hiring predictions, one of the fascinating conclusions was articulated by Knowledge@Wharton today. Companies want people with people skills. Their January 7 post was oriented to finding money for innovation, but the post went on to develop that idea. The ability to communicate well and other “soft skills” are just as important as technological expertise. This differs not in the slightest from research at the Dallas Fed dating back to 2003 when they found that people skills are at the top of the talent hierarchy and predicted it would stay there. So no matter how few years of work, we’re all going to need a technology PLUS people skills for significant success and money in our pockets. The Wharton report was oriented to both Bachelor degreed people and MBAs. Technology expertise without people skills no longer provides much in the way of employability or security.

A recession is a great time to conduct a deep self-audit and take every advantage to develop those skills.
