Twitter For Job Search
9th February, 2009 - Posted by Robin Ogden -
Hello! Twitter - many of us are all ‘atwitter’ about Twitter and there is good reason to be. What a great place to connect! I have to admit when I first heard of Twitter a few months back and decided to join my first thoughts were…huh?? How do I use this thing? But, once I got started it grew on me quickly and it was obvious why Twitter is so popular and powerful at the same time.
Growing and connecting with a strong community has become an essential part of job search, as well as overall career management. It just isn’t done alone any longer and the stronger your network the quicker you will land a job. Twitter has become a powerful new tool in this sector and its ability to help you with your job search is now front and center.
Obviously, one of the things you need to be careful of is what you twitter about. Just remember that it is easy for employers to find you on social networks - so, don’t say anything you wouldn’t feel comfortable having an employer and/or recruiter read about you. That goes for Facebook, MySpace and any other social networking site as well.
I was recently talking to a colleague who shared with me an experience that one of her clients had regarding Twitter. Her client started up on Twitter and spent a bit of time beginning to grow her network there (and having fun with it). She began a conversation with one of her connections and it soon grew into a career sharing conversation, which then soon grew into an interview for her client. That’s the power of these types of connections. Of course, not all connections will work out this way and you need to be careful about how much data you share with strangers online - all the necessary precautions should always be taken. But, I think you can see by the short version of this story that Twitter is a powerful connector.
Good luck in your job search and ‘happy twittering’.
